MISSION
The Department of English at Shri Govind Guru University is committed to providing quality education through our M.A. and Ph.D. programs, tailored to the needs of students from rural backgrounds. We strive to conduct pioneering research focused on translating oral literature of local communities into English, thereby preserving cultural heritage and promoting inclusivity. Our mission extends to integrating regional literature into our curriculum, enriching academic discourse and nurturing a deep appreciation for diverse literary traditions among our students.
About the Department
The Department of English became functional in the academic year 2020-21. Situated at the distance of 88 kilometers from Vadodara and 118 Kilometers from Ahmedabad, the department is easily accessible by railway and highway. It is surrounded by many tourist attractions that offer unique opportunities to visualize and experience rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and monuments. The department offers postgraduate level programs: Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.
The first successful batch of the students of Master of Arts was out in 2021-22. Keeping in view the local geographical and cultural demographics as well as international standards laid down by the UGC, the department offers a cutting-edge curriculum to cater to the holistic needs of the students of the region. It is noteworthy to mention that the department has taken concrete steps in implementing the vision of NEP 2020 in curriculum frameworks. While instilling keen interests in literary investigations, the department also promotes interdisciplinarity, as per the guidelines of NEP 2020, cutting across the varied disciplines to cultivate a broad understanding and innovative problem-solving skills among students. In addition, the department, while maintaining global standards, facilitates innovative research projects as part of the doctoral program.
The department has a unique language laboratory which can bolster the linguistic competence of the students and offer opportunities to utilize ICT tools for research and other academic activities. It has got a dedicated library with a rich collection of literary and nonliterary texts, magazines, scholarly journals, and E-books. In addition, the department also boasts of its state-of-the-art infrastructure catering to all the academic needs of the students. The students also benefit from the department’s placement assistance, coaching of NET and GSET examinations, and other relevant academic events. Further, the department has got a required number of dedicated faculty members who perform their academic duties sincerely.
The department recognizes the rich heritage and traditions of the tribal communities and accordingly lays more emphasis on tribal literature and comparative studies of other indigenous and aboriginal literature. It stands committed to the values of cultural diversity and inclusiveness, cultivating a cosmopolitan environment to attract national and global talent at the campus.
